Books / Consumer Guide / Culture / Open Source

This week we look at some classic books on architecture available for free online.

The Gutenberg Project, hosted by the Open Source platform iBiblio, famously provides access to tons of great writing whose copyright has expired. Check out their architecture section, and take a look at some of these classics.

Ten Books on Architecture by Vitruvius (100 BCE)

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci (15th c.)

The Poetry of Architecture by John Ruskin (1837-1838)

Architecture and Democracy by Claude Fayette Bragdon (1923)

Consider donating to this incredible project, here.

Google Books has also done a great job providing exhaustive previews of titles relating to all facets of deisgn and architecture, but has also the advantage of working with more contemporary works, provided they observe copyright… to an extent. Here are some architecture books chez Google, which you can read online, if not on an eBook reader.

Rem Koolhaas::Conversations with Students, Edited by Rem Koolhaas and Sanford Kwinter
