The Economist has profiled a handful of online crowd-funding models based around the world, including Brickstarter and Neighbor.ly in the US, which give local residents a more transparent (and dare we say less bureaucratic) means of executing civic projects. Critics worry these crowd-sourced civic projects will dissuade government bodies further from funding public works, but fans say it’ll be worth getting to have a more immediate stake in the neighborhood.
